During this webinar, two safe routes to school resources were shared. I-WALK presented by Tami Larson and the Iowa Bicycle Coalition's program, Iowa Safe Routes to School presented by Nick Sobocinski. I-WALK is an Iowa Safe Routes to School (SRTS) project funded through the Iowa Department of Transportation, administered by Iowa Department of Public Health and Iowa State University Extension, and implemented by communities across Iowa with the goal of providing community coalitions with relevant local information to help them continuously update, implement, and evaluate their Safe Routes to School plan. Twelve Iowa communities participated in the I-WALK pilot project, launched in September 2010. Iowa Safe Routes to School is Iowa's Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Encouragement and Education Program. The program offers provides safety education and encouragement to students, schools, and communities throughout the state.

During this webinar, Jill Roeder of Linn County Public Health along with Chris Doster and Jennifer Bice of Ringgold County Public Health share their work to reduce tobacco use. In 2009, the Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) program was created to support evidence and practice based MAPPS (Media, Access, Point of decision information, Price, and Social support services) strategies to support systems change. The presentations highlight effective media strategies and discuss the activities, challenges and successes to implementing evidence-based MAPPS strategies to reduce tobacco use and to eliminate exposure to second hand smoke. The presentation covers tobacco policy strategies, but is applicable to nutrition and physical activity.
Hosted by the Iowa Care for Yourself Program at the Iowa Department of Public Health, this webinar offers information on community-based physical activity strategies. Strategies include how to make the environment more walkable and bikeable, a hands on resource guide for providing community-based physical activity opportunities, and a project success highlight, I-WALK (a safe routes to school project in 12 Iowa communities).
