Types of Support
Federal and State grants are awarded for project support. The funds many only be used to pay for allowable expenses related to the project as described in the grant application. Foundations award many different types of support. The grant writer should identify which type of support is needed and request the appropriate support from the Foundation. Not all foundations give all types of support, so it is important to match your organization’s needs to the foundation’s funding initiatives.
Types of Foundation Support include the following:
- General Operating
- Program Development
- Program Implementation
It is important to know that general operating support can be spent on administrative, fundraising, or program expenses incurred in the regular course of monthly operations. Given the opportunity to request either program support or general operating support, most nonprofit organizations prefer general operating support given the versatility it affords.
