Investing in a Healthier America:
Health Plan and Community Partnerships
From NIHCM: For decades steady increases in lifestyle-related illnesses have affected our quality of life and our bottom line. With more than half of Americans now facing at least one chronic disease, the status quo is no longer acceptable. Across the country, health plans and communities are working together to reshape the behaviors and environmental conditions that have led so many Americans down unhealthy paths.
To discuss strategies for improving public health through community-based collaborations, NIHCM Foundation and the Trust for America’s Health hosted a webinar on February 11, 2014. The event included the following presentations:
- Anne De Biasi from Trust for America’s Health emphasized the importance of collaboration among a wide range of stakeholders to better address the social and behavioral determinants of health and highlighted examples of strong cross-sector partnerships.
- Speakers from Wellmark, Inc. and Healthways discussed factors contributing to declining health and rising health care costs, as well as their coordinated response, the Blue Zones Project, a state-wide collaboration to implement community-based strategies for healthy living.
- Representatives from Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina and the North Carolina Recreation and Parks Association talked about their work to expand access to healthy food through community gardens and how the program was designed to compel partnerships and maximize local resources.
A recording of the event and copies of the presentation slides are available on the NIHCM website.
