  • About the Board

  • The Iowa Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board was established to license those working in the plumbing, hydronic, HVAC and refrigeration disciplines. The board issues trade licenses, specialty licenses and medical gas piping installation certification. Contractor licenses began to be issued on November 1, 2012. Anyone working in these disciplines in the state of Iowa is required to be licensed with the Board.

    Board members serve three-year terms except for the terms of the initial members, which are staggered so that three members' terms expire each calendar year. No board member shall serve more than three full terms. The board organizes annually and selects a chairperson and a secretary from its membership.

Alert - Online credit card payment

Change of Examination Vendor

June 30, 2014 is the last date that Prometric will provide examinations for the Iowa Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board. Beginning July 1, 2014, a new examination vendor will begin providing new discipline examinations for master and journeyperson levels in the plumbing, HVAC/refrigeration, mechanical, and hydronics disciplines. In addition, a journeyperson sheet metal examination will be offered.

It is recommended that anyone interested in testing on or after July 1, 2014 become familiar with the newest codes associated with each discipline. Mechanical disciplines utilize the 2012 IMC with Chapter 61 State Mechanical Code amendments. Plumbing discipline utilizes the 2012 UPC with Chapter 25 State Plumbing Code amendments.


Renewal Applications Available July 1, 2014

Online and paper renewal applications are now available. Click the green tab to the left marked Licensure, then look for the link titled “Renew a License”. Click on that link and you will find renewal information, a paper application that can be downloaded, directions for filling out applications, and a link to the online application.

Please take time to read everything on the renewal application and check the appropriate boxes.

SPECIAL NOTE: A new Mechanical license is available at renewal.

· If eligible for the Mechanical license it will be the first option on your online renewal.

· If you are also renewing a plumbing license, make sure you click the box that appears when you begin filling out the application.

· At the end of the online Mechanical application, Do Not Check Out. Select the button “Submit and Return Home” in order to add a plumbing and or specialty license and qualify for the 30% discount.

Iowa Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board 2013 Annual Budget

Pursuant to Iowa Code 105.9, the Iowa Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board has submitted their 2013 Annual Budget Report to the Iowa State Legislature.

The report is now available for review.


Contractor License Fee as of March 12, 2014

The Iowa Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board wants to remind Contractors who are performing Iowa Code 105 covered work that they must obtain a Contractor license.

Effective March 12, 2014 fees for the Contractor license will be $250.00. Fees must be submitted with the application in order to be processed.
