According to its formal definition, public health is the science of protecting the safety and improving the health of communities through education, policy making and research for disease and injury prevention.
While a doctor treats people who are sick, public health’s mission is to try to prevent people from getting sick or injured in the first place. IDPH and its local partners promote public health through efforts in disease surveillance, environmental health, professional licensing, behavioral health issues, and much more.
