IDPH - Question of the Week

Bed bug bites cause large, itchy welts on the skin, but the bites do not carry disease.

Bed bug bites usually cause large, itchy welts on the skin. These welts may not appear for 24 to 48 hours after the bite. While their bites are uncomfortable, bed bugs are not known to spread disease.

Summer is a time when many families plan vacations. It's a good idea to take precautions to ensure you only bring memories home from your getaway - not bed bugs. Bed bugs can hitch a ride home in suitcases or on clothing, so be sure to take proper precautions when traveling:

  • Check luggage and clothing carefully after travel looking for bed bugs and bug droppings.
  • Launder clothing immediately and scrub luggage with a stiff brush after return to remove any eggs.

And if shopping at garage sales, carefully examine any secondhand furniture, bedding, or beds before bringing home.
