Viral hepatitis describes those infections that can cause inflammation of the liver, are infectious, and are caused by viruses. This includes hepatitis A, B, C, D and E.

Common symptoms of viral hepatitis include jaundice, abdominal pain, fatigue, loss of appetite, and nausea. All cases of viral hepatitis are potentially communicable,. Cases of viral hepatitis, most commonly hepatitis A, B or C, are reportable to the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) as mandated by Iowa Code section 139A.3 and Iowa Administrative Code 641, Chapter 1   Adobe Acrobat Logo.

There were an estimated 56,000 cases of hepatitis A and 60,000 acute cases of hepatitis B in the United States in 2004. There is an additional 1 - 1.25 million Americans with chronic hepatitis B. Overall in the United States, it is estimated that there are 4.1 million cases of hepatitis C with 3.2 million of those cases leading to chronic infection.
