The SNS is an infrastructure built upon partnerships between the Iowa Dept. of Public Health, federal agencies, many other state agencies, county, and local government agencies, and private business partners. The purpose of the SNS is to provide mass medical and pharmaceutical supplies in the event of a public health emergency to help reduce morbidity and mortality.

To provide a statewide, effective plan and operational procedures to ensure Iowa is prepared to receive and distribute the assets of the Strategic National Stockpile and ensure integration into Iowa’s Homeland Security and Emergency Plan.
The purpose of the SNS Committee is to actively engage in the development and implementation of the SNS plan for Iowa to request, receive, organize, distribute, dispense and recover the 12-hour Push Package and the Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) as needed during or immediately following an act of biological or chemical terrorism when local and statewide resources have been overwhelmed or exhausted. It is the responsibility of the membership to provide regular updates and communication regarding the activities and progress made by this Committee to the constituents they represent.
