The Tuberculosis (TB) Control Program is divided into two functional areas -- surveillance and prevention. Surveillance activities include active disease reporting, collection, and interpretation of data as well as monitoring of mycobacteriology laboratory reports. Prevention activities include supportingtargeted testing, providing medications, professional education, and consultation.
The Iowa TB Control Program is committed to the goal of elimination, which is defined as an incidence rate of less than one TB case per 1 million persons per year. To achieve the goal of TB elimination, the following resources are currently available from the state TB Control Program:
Reporting Requirements  ![]()
State Medication Program -- Provides free TB therapy for all latent TB infection and suspected and active cases for persons who reside within the state of Iowa. To order medications, please click the Medication Order Form  ![]()
Directly Observed Therapy (DOT)  ![]()
Contact Investigations  ![]()
Mantoux Skin Testing -- Provides free PPD for skin testing for close contact investigations, high-risk populations, and public health nurses responsible for TB follow-up activity.
University Hygienic Laboratory  
-- Provides Rapid Testing  
for identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, isolation of M. tuberculosis complex, sputum collection kits, and rapid electronic transfer of test results to the state TB Control Program.
State Outreach Activity Reimbursement Plan -- Provides financial reimbursement for local public health agencies for the following outreach activities: Directly Observed Therapy, transportation, translation services, and incentives and enablers.
Consultation and Educational Training -- Provides free consultation and educational training upon request.
Heartland National Tuberculosis Center-- Provides medical consultation  
to medical providers.
