The Service Task Force identifies activities that the Advisory Council on Brain Injuries (ACBI) can support or be involved in that would improve the life of individuals with brain injury by making needed service available in the state of Iowa. Activities that the Service Task Force has been involved in have included supporting legislation that mandated the Medicaid Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Waiver for persons with a brain injury and participating in a working group, which assisted the Department of Human Services in the development and implementation of the HCBS brain injury waiver. Members of the Service Task Force and other council members are currently involved in the Department of Human Services redesign/design of the disability service system for adults and children with Mental Health, Mental Retardation, Developmental Disabilities, and Brain Injury.
The task force has a long history of supporting research which is studying the needs of Iowans with a brain injury, supporting research which is looking at the availability of services for Iowans with a brain injury, involvement in working groups and coalitions to improve service delivery for all persons with disabilities, and participating in the Iowa Department of Public Health's (IDPH) Meeting the Needs of Iowans with Brain Injury TBI State Grant. This federal grant has enabled the IDPH, as lead agency for brain injury in Iowa, and the Service Task Force to facilitate systems change initiatives, working to ensure that the needs of Iowans with traumatic brain injury are met in an efficient manner.
