The State Substitute Medical Decision-Making Board is established under Iowa Code 135.28 and counties may appoint local substitute medical decision-making boards under Iowa Code 135.29. These boards may make certain decisions regarding proposed medical care for persons who do not have another substitute decision maker and who are unable to understand the nature and consequences of the proposed medical care and thus can not give or refuse to give their own informed consent.
