A national health access initiative for low-income, uninsured families

Covering Kids and Families is a collaborative effort of state and local community-based agencies, child advocacy groups, and professional organizations. The project is designed to increase access to health care coverage for children by identifying and enrolling eligible children into Medicaid and hawk-i, implementing system changes to reduce enrollment and retention barriers, coordinating existing coverage programs for low-income children, and advancing public policy for health care coverage for families. While funding is provided by The Caring Foundation, this initiative is led by the CKF and supported by the Iowa Department of Public Health. The mission of the CKF Coalition is to partner with communities to promote health care coverage for children and families.

Commonwealth Fund Report

According to a new report by the Commonwealth Fund, Iowa ranks top in the nation overall in health care for children, as well as children's access to care, family insurance premiums, equity, and the potential for Iowa children to lead long healthy, productive lives. The report, U.S. Variations in Child Health System Performance: A State Scorecard, ranked states on 13 indicators for children, grouped in categories that include access, quality, costs, equity, and healthy outcomes. While ranking first in the nation overall, Iowa was second in the access and quality categories. The report is available at www.commonwealthfund.org/publications.

What the Health?
Covering Kids and Families, through work with the Healthcare Coverage for Kids Coalition (HCKC), has developed a teen health insurance information packet titled, "What the Health? - Answers & Information." The packet is a teen version of the Insured Success/Family Education packet and was developed using student feedback. It defines health insurance, describes what medical care costs, displays an insurance options chart, and provides a health care coverage glossary. The packet is very teen friendly and is a great outreach tool for describing health insurance and the hawk-i program to teenagers.

This group has also developed a What the Health? Curriculum to be used with the packet intended to teach teenagers about the value of health insurance, the different types of health insurance, how to access health insurance and the vocabulary necessary to navigate the health insurance market. The curriculum is flexible, it includes activities that target student audiences between 7th and 12th grade. It can be compressed or expanded to fit into any timeframe making this a great resource for any teacher or educator. Both the What the Health? Packet and Curriculum fit great into a three ring binder with the "already created" binder cover and binder spine below.

Dental Poster
Covering Kids and Families has developed a dental poster now available for use through dental providers. CKF created the poster to inform dental providers of how they can help children access dental services. The poster explains the three possible dental plans for the hawk-i program and how the providers can determine which plan participates in their area.
