Fluoridation

Fluoridation is the adjustment of the fluoride concentration in drinking water to prevent tooth decay in the population served by the water system. In Iowa the optimum concentration is 1.0 mg/L (ppm).

The Fluoridation Program is responsible for:

• Monitoring the fluoridation operations of the 245 public water systems that currently adjust fluoride. The water systems voluntarily submit monthly operation reports and samples to certified laboratories.
• On-site surveillance and technical support of water system operators.
• Providing public information on the benefits and safety of fluoridation.
