All facilities providing mammography or stereotactic breast biopsy services in Iowa must be authorized by the State of Iowa. This includes mobile facilities who provide services in Iowa AND facilities located within Iowa who choose ACR as their Accrediting Body.

In order to become certified to perform mammography services anywhere in the United States, a facility must first obtain accreditation from an FDA approved Accrediting Body. In Iowa, facilities can choose either the State of Iowa or the ACR to be their Accrediting Body.
Certification: Initially, annual inspection, and every three years.
Nationwide, the Food and Drug Administration is the Certification Agency for mammography facilities. The State of Iowa has been approved as a Certifying Agency by the FDA and handles most of the certification functions for all facilities located within Iowa.
IDPH reduces cost for Iowa mammography facilities
by performing all three functions.
