Regulatory programs have been established to assure compliance with the appropriate section of 641 Iowa Administrative Code, Chapters 38, 39, 40, and 41. Recent changes in 641 IAC, Chapter 41.1, titled "X-Ray Machines Used for Mammography," are unique in that they deal not only with the radiation producing equipment but also address the physician consultant, the interpreting physician, the medical physicist, and the equipment operator.
There are currently 6,630 x-ray machines in Iowa. Staff of the bureau routinely conduct in-depth inspections of these devices located in healing arts and industrial institutions.
