Flex Grant Funding Provided Directly to Entities

First, critical access hospitals could apply to receive funds through a competitive process. These hospitals received the dollar amounts $10,500 and $15,500. Once a hospital is successful in the competitive process they are eligible to receive two additional years of non-competitive funds as long as the proposed project meets Iowa FLEX guidelines and aligns with the Iowa FLEX federal grant proposal. The critical access hospitals in Iowa requested we raise the amount a hospital could request. This accounts for the two amounts; we still have a few hospitals that are on the early cycle when the amount was $10,500. Some hospitals received a lower contract amount due to requesting funds for areas outside the scope of the FLEX program.

Second, a critical access hospital network could apply on behalf of their critical access hospitals. Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa was awarded funding.

Third, critical access hospitals could apply for funding to send staff to a national conference. This funding has enabled critical access hospitals to send staff that otherwise would not be able to attend to a national conference on best practices in quality, patient safety, and other hospital issues.

Fourth, critical access hospitals could apply for funding to complete Emergency Medical Services projects. These awards were for $4,800
