Welcome to Iowans Fit For Life!

Iowans Fit for Life is a joint statewide initiative between the Iowa Department of Public Health and its partners that promotes increased opportunities for physical activity and healthy eating for Iowans of all ages. Iowans Fit for Life completed Iowans Fit for Life State Plan and its implementation. Ultimately, Iowans Fit for Life aims to improve the health of Iowans by reducing the risks and preventing disease related to inactivity and unhealthy eating behaviors. Iowans Fit For Life is funded through the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity (DNPAO) . CDC Releases Vital Signs on Walking

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report concluding more Americans are walking and those who walk regularly are healthier. Even so, fewer than half of American adults and only 45 percent of Iowa adults reach the recommended guideline of 30 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week. To help encourage walking as a fitness option, the CDC report highlighted successful initiatives to encourage more activity, including the Iowans Walking Assessment Logistics Kit (I-WALK) program.

CDC Releases New Obesity Data

Twelve states currently have an adult obesity rate above 30 percent, according to a new analysis released by the Trust for America's Health (TFAH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). The analysis used the state obesity rates released made available by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Mississippi had the highest rate of obesity at 34.9 percent, while Colorado had the lowest rate at 20.7 percent. Iowa's rate is 29%. Click here to view more CDC obesity data.

Don't forget that September is National Fruits & Veggies-More Matters® month!

Sadly, in Iowa, a mere 13.5% of adults eat fruits and vegetables 5 or more times per day (2011 BRFSS). Visit the Fruit & Veggies: More Matters® and CDC Fruit and Vegetable web sites for resources to assist with increasing fruit and vegetable consumption. There are also many different toolkits available to help celebrate the month on Produce for Better Health Foundation's website.
