The Iowa Board of Optometry evaluates the qualifications of applicants for licensure and grants licenses to those who qualify.

The Board establishes rules and regulations to ensure the integrity and competence of licensed Optometrists and investigates complaints for unprofessional conduct.

The Board is the link between the consumer and the licensed Optometrist, as such, promotes the public health, welfare and safety.

Beginning with the July 1, 2008 continuing education biennium, therapeutic licensees shall provide proof of current certification in CPR by the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross or an equivalent organization. At least two hours per biennium is required but credit will be granted for four hours.

Licensees are responsible for meeting all licensure requirements and should review the rules carefully and frequently. Select Laws and Rules from the drop down box above and scroll through the Rules for detailed information about Licensure Definitions, Licensure Renewal, Reactivation and other important content specific to this profession.

You may now verify and print the licensure status of professionals and establishments by following five easy steps.

  • Go to www.licensediniowa.gov
  • Select "License Search".
  • Insert the licensee's name or license number.
  • Select the profession from the dropdown list.
  • Select "Print" for a paper copy.

Address and Name Changes

Select your board from the drop down list at the top of this page under board navigation and click "GO". On your home page, scroll down to Address and Name Change and click "GO". Follow the instructions.

Licensees must notify the board of a change of name or current mailing address within 30 days after the change occurs. Failure to notify the board of changes may result in your license being placed on inactive status.
