We believe data should be available and should be considered part of our strategic plan to make SBIRT effective and sustainable in all Iowa communities. Numerous bodies of research have been conducted assessing the efficacy of SBIRT in multiple settings and the evidence is great demonstrating the efficacy of SBIRT practices. Among the US Preventative Service Task Force’s 25 recommended services, alcohol screening and intervention for adults ranked the third and fourth highest when compared to other recommended services on their effectiveness and cost – effectiveness. Notably, the impact of screening for alcohol was ranked HIGHER than screening for blood pressure, high cholesterol, breast, colon or cervical cancer, and osteoporosis. If we want Iowa to be one of the healthiest states in the nation, then data collection and utilizing these data will provide us with invaluable information to help our partners be successful in sustaining SBIRT throughout their communities.
