What Is WIC?

WIC (Women Infants, & Children) is a supplemental nutrition program for babies, children under the age of 5, pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and women who have had a baby in the last 6 months. WIC helps families by providing healthy foods, nutrition education, and referrals to other health care agencies. The Iowa WIC Program phone number is 1-800-532-1579.

WIC Families

WIC families include infants and children up to 5 years old and women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or have had a baby in the last 6 months. Fathers, stepparents, grandparents and foster parents may all apply for their children.

WIC Agencies

WIC agencies provide services locally to the WIC families including nutrition education, breastfeeding promotion and support, nutritious food packages, and referrals to other health programs.

WIC Vendors

WIC vendors are stores that are approved by the State WIC office to accept WIC checks that are provided by the local WIC agencies.
